To say that Chanel Taboo is my favouritest nail polish ever, would be, believe it or not, the understatement of the year. Pretty much since it was acceptable to start donning darker, autumnal colours (August?!), this has been on my digits. Sure, there’s been some breaks in between, where I’ve gotten a fresh gel mani (yeah my nails are fake now; they just couldn’t handle lab work). But two days later, Taboo has been slicked over em. Who am I to be using a limited edition Chanel with such abandon, you say? Well fear not for my collection/sanity ladies, I’ve managed to find, not one, but TWO dupes. I know, where’s that sainthood?
In the bottle, Sally Hansen Rule of Plum looks to be a dead ringer for Chanel Taboo. On the nail it’s a slightly different story. This one takes a good four coats to build up to Taboo-esque vampy depth, and still leans a little red, rather than inky purple. I was surprised by this, as Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure is one of my favourite polish formulas – usually a dead cert for two coat perfect application. I think it’s because the base of this polish is more red-toned than Taboo. Still though, once you lash on those coats it’s pretty much indistinguishable to a non-polish-addict.
No7 Gel-Look Shine in Galaxy pleasantly surprised me. This one looked the most red-toned, and therefore least Taboo-like, in the bottle. It applied a little thin and patchy on the first coat (Taboo is almost a one-coater) but there you can see that the base is actually a blue-purple. Boding well. After the second coat, and perhaps a third for perfection, you have pretty much a dead on ringer for Taboo. From the inky-purple base to the purple, red, blue and pink sparkle. It’s perfect. Don’t believe me? Check it out below.
It’s SO hard to capture the depth of this polish on camera. You’ll have to believe me when I say, it comes alive. And No7 Galaxy is a dead on dupe as far as I’m concerned. Sally Hansen Rule of Plum? After four coats it still leans too red to be a dupe. It’s a lovely colour in its own right though.
So, moral of the story? Get yourself to a No7 counter stand STAT. Even better, there’s a voucher event happening until Sunday 2nd November. So if you don’t have a No7 voucher already, maybe make a sneaky purchase first, then go back for your prize with €4 off. Winning at life.
What’s your favourite Autumn polish? Got any other dupes to share?
